What Is Water Pollution ?

Water pollution occurs when a natural source of water is contaminated by several means. Rivers, lakes, oceans and groundwater are few examples of water resources. Water pollution not only affects human beings, it also harms micro and macro organisms. Since it creates an ecological imbalance, it leads to the damage of individual species, its population and further the whole biological community.

While considering the reasons of water pollution, a number of direct and indirect causes come into play.

Water pollution, because of its major consequences, has been a matter of global discussion. It is known as one of the major causes of deaths and diseases. An unexpected figure of 14,000 deaths per day shows the urgency to prevent it.

A study suggests that proper toilet is not accessible to 700 million Indians. In a similar way, diarrheal sickness results in 1,000 deaths of Indian children everyday. 90 percent of cities in China is affected with water pollution. 500 million people are unable to get access to safe drinking water.

Quite obviously, industrialized countries are suffering more than developing countries. A latest research done on water quality in the US states some interesting facts like 45 percent, 47 percent and 32 percent of stream miles, lake acres, and bay and estuarine square miles are polluted respectively.

In an overview, when water is affected by anthropogenic pollutants and it becomes unsafe for basic use like drinking, cooking or bathing, it is said to be polluted.

Some natural phenomena like floods, algae blooms, or tsunami are also responsible for water pollution. However, we cannot control these phenomena.
