Various pesticides and fertilizers, which contain harmful chemicals, enter the resources of water. This makes the water harmful, and therefore, it cannot be used. Marine animals and plants die because of poisonous effect of these chemicals. Ultimately, ecological imbalance occurs.
Other contaminants like radioactive elements, heat, and organic, inorganic, acidic and basic compounds also cause water pollution. These compounds are sufficient to pollute the water in such a manner that they can cause a number of severe diseases in humans, animals as well as in plants.
Radioactive elements like uranium and thorium used in nuclear plants cause a serious problem to the plants.
Excess heat released from the industrial waste products increases the temperature of water. The high water temperature creates unfavorable environment for the marine plants which results in their exploitation.
Water contamination disturbs the process of photosynthesis in plants. Due this interruption, plants are unable to grow, reproduce, and produce their food and oxygen. Lack of oxygen directly harms the macro and micro organisms.
Highly concentrated sodium chloride water causes death of coral reefs. Coral reefs prevent the oceans' soil erosion, and also provide homes to marine plants and animals.
In addition, water pollution decreases the proportion of oxygen in the water. Decrease in oxygen results death of animals and plants, and decrease in carbon dioxide. Lack of carbon dioxide inhibits the growth of plants.
