| Facts About Water Pollution
Safe water and sanitation are not accessible to 20 percent and 50 percent of the world’s population respectively. The WHO or World Health Organization has set some suggestions on how to control the water pollution and maintain the balance in ecological environment. |

However, many countries are unable to get even close to these standards. The fecal coliform in rivers and lakes of Asia is about 50 times higher than the WHO standards. A study done by the ICWE in 1992 has shown that health of about 1,200 million people is affected by contaminated water. 15 million children under the age of 5 die each year due to diseases brought on by consuming contaminated water.
Eutrophication is caused by the factors which increase the concentration of nutrients. When fertilizers used by farmers enter the natural sea water, they increase the growth or decay of sea plants and animals. This decay and death of marine life make the water dirty leading in water pollution. Also, diversity of flora and fauna decreases. The actual composition of organisms gets altered, and toxic effects of eutrophication kill rare and ecologically important animals and plants.
Industrial wastes, containing heavy metals like lead, mercury, arsenic and cadmium are also responsible for water pollution. Hospitals also do the same proactively.
Hypoxia is resulted by eutrophication. Hypoxia occurs when the percentage of oxygen in water is reduced. This percentage ranges from 1 to 30. By decreasing the amount of nitrogen and phosphorous in fertilizers, this type of problem can be controlled. Use of natural herbicides is also a good option.
