This water, when come in contact by several means, causes various harmful diseases. This is the reason that the concern requires a global discussion and prevention.

Water is polluted by different organic, inorganic and radioactive elements. Various chemicals, pathogens and fertilizers are sufficient enough to make the water as dirty to produce harmful diseases.

In order to kill pests and weeds, farmers use fertilizers and pesticides. These pesticides reach the groundwater, lakes and rivers, and end up causing water pollution. Groundwater is used for drinking and cooking. If it is not purified properly, it may cause severe health problems.

Waste products are disposed into the water by industries. These products contain heavy metals as well as acids which affect the marine life. When humans eat fish containing heavy metals, it leads to disorders like birth defects, cancer and various health problems.

Construction industry uses cement, lubricants, plastics and metals which are poured into the sea water. Hospitals, in a similar way, participate actively in this.

Acid rains, floods, volcano, and tsunami are acts performed by the nature which ultimately pollute water too.

When food items and excretory products enter the water, they facilitate growth of algae. Algae spread over the level of water preventing the flow of sunlight, oxygen and air to the marine plants and animals.

The WHO or World Health Organization has set some suggestions on how to control the water pollution and maintain the balance in ecological environment. However, many countries are unable to get even close to these standards. The fecal coliform in rivers and lakes of Asia is about 50 times higher than the WHO standards. More..
