There are umpteen numbers of reasons for soil pollution. Those arise from cultivation, industries and also from human activity. The affects of soil pollution are also aplenty. It poses a great threat to human, plant and wild life. Soil pollutants may continue to exist in the environment even after they pollute the soil. So, just checking out the pollutants is not enough as the polluted area is to be cleansed thoroughly.

The main source of pollution is the chemicals those are used for cultivation and the industries those manufacture the chemicals. Sulfur dioxide emission is a potential soil pollutant. It affects acid rain. Providing scrubbers and smokestacks for coal burning power plants has reduced the sulfur dioxide emission markedly. It was reported from 1980 - 2008 that sulfur dioxide emission was reduced to 71 percent. Citizens should compel the legislators for the development of alternative source of fuel. Even in the domestic front, with the decrease of energy, pollution will be also less.

Another common source of energy is packaging waste. One can imagine the quantity of this when compared to the total waste, packaging waste is one third. Another five million tons waste is added in the holiday season. The chemicals those are used in paper affect the soil. So, one must be vigilant if purchased items have elaborate packing. It is better to avoid buying such things.

The excess water that is let off from the farming contains lot o pollutants. The pollutants like phosphorous and nitrogen are dangerous. So usage of pesticides and fertilizers must be avoided as far as possible. Also, personal care is needed to reduce the soil pollution. Use of plastic and paper must be avoided to the maximum limit.
