As water pollution and air pollution, now soil pollution is a reality. To control it, it must be thoroughly understood. Soil pollution starts with reckless throw of wastes. These wastes include plastic and much other bio undegradable material. Added to it, big companies make large craters and dump greater amounts of industrial waste material into them. |

When they are filled, they are covered. As it not biodegradable, this material causes soil pollution.Indiscriminate use of fertilizers and chemicals makes the lands to lose their original strength and in the course of time they lose fertility and become unfit for cultivation. Added to it, soil erosion makes it own contribution to the soil pollution.
Soil is a non renewable source but having great potential for degrading. The study published by the European Commission in April, 2002 said that decreased organic matter and unabated pollution pose great threat to soil. Soil pollution is mainly due to chemicals used on soil. The chemicals affect the immune system and may result in cancer, birth defects and gene mutation particularly for human beings. This extends to animal life also.
In the US, there is too much usage of nitrogen to increase the fertility of the land. Nitrogen is necessary for the land. But too much of it spoils the land and whole ecosystem.
To check soil erosion, both in developed and developing countries formulated a legal frame work. The whole problem is how to combat the progressively increasing pollution.
