Leaving out the major cities like New York and Los Angeles, and a few other ones, most cities are not well connected through public transport. This invariably increases the dependency on cars. In the United States, if a person does not have a car, then they are almost handicapped.Today, most of the air pollution is caused by cars. It happens to be one of the greatest contributors towards pollution. The fuel emissions from car are significantly higher than the others. Fuel emission is the same form of gas that you put in the gas station, but it has a different physical property. So, the car is using the oil and giving out the gas and that remains as a residue in the atmosphere. Fuel emissions do not interact with other chemicals nor do they get naturally absorbed by anything else. Instead they linger in the atmosphere for a long period of time and contribute to several other kinds of pollution like air and water pollution. They are also the cause of acid rain in some parts of the world.
The fuel emissions are called hydrocarbons. They are a combustible form of fuel. These hydrocarbons can react with natural sunlight and nitrous oxide, and convert into smog. Pollution caused by cars can lead to several problems among human beings like respiratory problems, cancer and also irritation of the eyes.
