What Is Pollution ?

Contamination of environment by chemicals and agents that make the environment inappropriate for the wildlife, plants and humans to live in their natural habitat is known as pollution.

It damages human health and the working ecosystem. Human actions, natural disasters, damage to wastewater collection structures and treatment infrastructures due to hurricanes or floods cause pollution. Garbage which is thrown by humans into oceans or on the ground causes pollution.Pollution diminishes in intensity as you move away from the pollution source. It exists in the environment as:

  • Air pollution from vehicle emissions, in cities, causes huge pollution. Poor ventilation is the cause of air pollution inside rooms and buildings.
  • Water pollution, which is largely caused by water sources getting contaminated by sewage contaminating watercourses.
  • Radioactive pollution caused by insufficient nuclear safety.
  • Airplanes, ships and highway vehicles contribute the most to the menace of air pollution worldwide.
  • Over-illumination and interference in astronomy cause light pollution.
  • Noise pollution is transitory. It ends when the source stops emitting it.
  • Photochemical air pollution, often found in cities, is also known as smog. Smog is harmful to health and reduces vision.
  • Recently, transportation means from Europe to Asia plays a major role in contributing to pollution levels. Industries have to incur high costs to control pollution, but failure to control it may cause irreversible damage to environment. Control waste production at the source by changing production processes, usage of less toxic materials, and reusing waste are other forms of pollution control. Also, governments should make efforts to avoid garbage dumping in water sources. Despite laws against pollution, it is constantly on a rise worldwide. Pollution is quite prominent in developing countries.
