Types Of Ocean Pollution

Marine pollution or ocean pollution occurs when pollutants like particulate matter, chemicals, waste from industries, agriculture and residences, noise or certain invasive microorganisms attack the water and have harmful effects on the flora and fauna living in the water.

Usually, the sources for ocean pollution originate from land. There are many different types of ocean pollution. Some of them are as follows:

Toxic Wastes: These are basically harmful and toxic materials that being thrown into the oceans of the world. Toxic waste is consumed by marine life, and can be passed through the food chain. As a result, even the seafood we eat could be contaminated with toxic wastes. Most of these poisonous materials are finding their way into oceans through farms, mines, leaking landfills and even dumps. Today, toxic wastes are killing fish and when consumed poisonous toxins like lead have the ability to damage the kidneys, brain and even the reproductive system. Paints, certain ceramic ware, water pipes, fishing lures, and manufacturing of lead batteries are responsible for introduction of lead into oceans and water sources. Even medical waste tends to find its way into oceans, and pose a health hazard.

Boating Pollution: Take boats for a ride in the ocean is a form of ocean pollution as the fumes from the engines are responsible for killing marine life. Also, gasoline leaks into the ocean, and is responsible for polluting the water and killing animals and plants in the ocean.

Garbage Dumping: This is a major problem as human waste, household garbage, plastics and even dirty water from homes are being dumped into oceans since early 1990s. Even sewage is known to flow into oceans, especially when storm drains overflow and sewage mixes with the water in the drains. Garbage dumping is not only making the water dirty, it is also killing off plants and animals that live in the oceans.

Wastewater: Wastewater from cities and towns is running off into oceans, lakes and rivers. This form of ocean pollution can only be reduced and that too by ensuring that the wastewater production is reduced. It has the potential to kill animals and plants in the ocean while dirtying the water.

Pollution:

What-Causes-Pollution      When pollutants enter the environment, be it water, soil, atmosphere or water, and end up making the environment unsuitable for living organisms, then it is termed as pollution. Chemicals, heat, light, noise, smoke and fumes are all pollutants. Sometimes, some pollutants like heavy metals are naturally present in the environment but in low levels. Therefore, they do not pose a risk to humans, plants and animals. However, due to human activities, the levels of these pollutants increase substantially and that is when they pose a danger. More..
