  • The term “Tsunami” has originated from a Japanese expression. Tsunamis are quite frequent in Japan, and many Japanese inhabitants have lost their lives due to this disastrous calamity.
  • A research led by a group of scientists detected traces of an asteroid-collision incident. This could have resulted in a huge tsunami which would have traversed around the Earth numerous times. It is believed that around 3.5 billion years ago, it flooded everything, leaving behind the tallest mountains. It resulted in the seashore of the continents being altered completely and annihilated nearly all life on land.
  • Tsunamis are sequence of huge sea waves induced by an undersea earthquake, landslide, or volcanic explosion. Moreover, a tsunami can also be produced by a massive meteor impingement on an ocean.
  • Mostly, an earthquake produces a tsunami if it has adequate energy. Also, there should be an aggressive motion of the earth to induce extensive and sudden dislocation of a gigantic quantity of water.
  • A tsunami is also recognized as a wave train as it contains chain of waves. It is not mandatory that the initial wave of a tsunami is the most vicious one.
  • Tidal waves are different from tsunamis.
  • Tsunami waves can be extremely long. They can traverse different oceans without losing much of their force and strength. For instance, the Indian Ocean tsunami traversed for more than 3,000 miles and reached to Africa. It possessed adequate energy to kill several inhabitants and obliterate their belongings.

 

  • A huge earthquake of magnitude 9 hit the Pacific Northwest in 1700 and produced a tsunami that induced flooding and impairment on the Pacific coast of Japan.
  • Tsunamis can traverse unobserved on the surface of a deep ocean at velocity of up to 500 miles an hour i.e. 800 kilometers an hour.
