When storms originate from the North Pacific Ocean, they are called as typhoons whereas in the North Atlantic, Eastern Pacific, and Caribbean, they are referred as hurricanes. Hurricanes originate from the Caribbean Sea and typhoons initiate from the South China Sea. Hence, it is considered that hurricane is a Caribbean word and typhoon is a Chinese word.

Often, typhoons are bigger than hurricanes since the Pacific Ocean is a lot bigger. In the Indian Ocean and South Pacific, they are referred as tropical cyclones.
It is said that hurricane and typhoon are definite names for tropical cyclones. A tropical cyclone is the common name for sub-tropical waters with downpour movements and specific cyclonic surface wind movement.

Tropical cyclones with greatest constant surface winds are known as tropical depressions. This is different from the situation mid-latitude populace suffer in a long and freezing winter. After the tropical storms get to winds of at least 17 m/s they are classically known as tropical storm. In the North Atlantic Ocean, the Northeast Pacific Ocean, or the South Pacific Ocean experience hurricanes and the Northwest Pacific Ocean face typhoons. Whereas, the Southwest Pacific Ocean west or Southeast Indian Ocean east experience severe tropical storms and the North Indian Ocean and the Southwest Indian Ocean face severe cyclonic storms and tropical cyclones respectively.
