This epidemic led to a financial loss of about $US 200 billion. This earthquake led to great loss of life and high level of destruction occurred. The spectacular collapse of the Hanshin expressway illustrates the effects of the high loads that were imposed on structures in the area.
The epicenter of this earthquake was Kobe which had populace of 1.5 million and experienced the strongest quakes. This is considered to be one of the most horrible earthquakes in the history of Japan which took more than 140,000 populates. Japan experienced the century’s most dreadful economic damage of ten trillion yen i.e. $200 billion USD. This earthquake has also been registered in all the history books as the priciest natural disaster to take place in a country.
Splintered gas lines caught fire; buildings caught fire, and busted water mains hindered firefighters' attempts to curb them. Earlier Japan had the older conventional domiciles. These domiciles had deep tiled roofs which weighed about 2 tons and could easily defy numerous typhoons that beset Kobe. However, its drawback was that it was supported by a light wooden frame. The wooden supports easily collapsed compressing the roof, hence led to destruction of several edifices. Thereafter, keeping in mind this pitfall, Japan has built recent homes with non-breakable walls and lighter roofs to evade such situations.
