Toxic waste possesses chemicals, heavy metals, radiation and harmful pathogens. Even household articles like batteries, fluorescent bulbs, used computer equipment and unused paints contain these toxins, and pose great threat to health when they are not properly disposed.
These toxins pass through water, streams, ground water or even through drinking water supplied by municipalities. Some toxins like mercury will be passed through environment to animals and human beings. These are deadly dangerous to human life, plant life, and animal life.
Added to common chemicals like mercury and nitrogen, there are chemicals like polychlorinated biphenyls, PCBs, vinyl chloride, dioxin and asbestos. There are radioactive wastes also. Most of the chemicals those are used in fertilizers, pesticides and insecticides pose great threat to soil and life around. They can cause cancer and congenital defects.
In countries like the US and the UK, some municipalities provide waste collection facility. Many cities possess waste disposal companies which come and take away the waste toxins for a charge. People must be vigilant to have the information which is disseminated through newspapers and TV channels.
