It checks soil erosion in two ways. It holds the soil from moving away. Secondly, the trees can as well check the wind speed.Roots beneath the soil form a network which prevents soil from heavy rains as well as from sunlight which makes it dried. Added to it, some plants can fix nitrogen in the soil which makes the soil more and more fertile. That also facilitates microorganism to grow and make the soil livelier.
In the cultivated lands also some space is left for shrubs to grow. They protect soil from wind and rain and also it provides space for plant seed. Even in the home gardens, it is better to leave some space around the garden for plant seeds like grass seed to grow.
Contour terrace farming is a very old type of farming to prevent land erosion. It is nothing but making use of all the contours of the available land. Hence, the rain water is well guided to the whole space. And also, it prevents the rain water to cut the land vertically. So it is always beneficial to alternate the cultivated land patches with tree lines. It gives a very long lasting cultivatable crop area.
Adopting this technique, many Mediterranean areas are cultivated since centuries.
Crop rotation, which was systemized in 19th century, was started in the Roman era, and was passed to the present time via the Middle Ages. After the main crop is harvested, alternatively the land is provided with quality enhancing crops like nitrogen fixers or compost beds which keeps soil very fertile.
