Consequences Of Soil Erosion

When the soil is transported from one place to another, soil erosion occurs. This process is done by natural as well as manmade factors. Generally, natural factors like water, rainfall and wind cause soil erosion. However, deforestation created by mankind can not be ignored as one of the reasons for rampant soil erosion.Areas with slopes show a high degree of soil erosion.

Trees hold the useful nutrients tightly with the soil. When these trees and plants are cut down, the soil becomes loosely bound, and is easily erode. Nepal located in the Himalayan Mountains is one of the best examples.

Few practices to use the land can help to control the soil erosion. Tree plantation, terrace and conservation tillage practices, and irrigation schemes to overcome droughts are able to reduce it.

If good methods and techniques are used by farmers, the structure and composition of the soil can be maintained. This is very useful as it also improves the soil quality. Crop rotation technique, plowing and use of humus should be implemented.

Following are the consequences of soil erosion:

The upper layers of the soil contain nutrients and useful organic matter. Erosion of these upper layers also decreases sufficient depth of the soil, which is required by roots. Thus, proper amount of water can not be stored.

The concentration of seeds, fertilizers and pesticides decreases.

Wind removes and uproots small plants with their root from the soil.

Soil, as a result of erosion, enters into different water sources and makes them dirty and contaminated. It provides the entrance of chemicals into the water.Depletion of layers of the soil also results in less filtration of the ground water.

Facts-About-Soil-Erosion      Intense water and wind flow cause soil erosion. This results in loss of soil with useful nutrients. Also, the land becomes uneven and rough. Fertility of the soil reduces, which is nowhere useful for planting. This is a very slow process, that cannot be noticed, but at the same time it occurs continuously. So, after some time, soil erosion creates major problems for soil and trees as well. More..
