              Over the last one hundred years, sea level rise is taking place at the rate of 1.8 mm each year. However, between the years 1993 and 2003, sea level rise was higher, around 2.8 mm to 3.1 mm each year. Global warming is playing a big role in sea level rise, and scientists claim in the coming century, this rise is bound to increase.Due to warming of the planet, the water is undergoing thermal expansion.

                Coupled with this, the ice sheets and glaciers are melting which is contributing to the rise in sea level. More than melting of ice sheets and glaciers, thermal expansion has been blamed for increase in the levels of the seas. Sea level rise statistics are quite frightening, especially if you take into consideration the statistics for 20th century. The rise has been between 90 mm and 880 mm, with an average of 480 mm. In this century, the scientists expect the sea level to rise by 2 meters, but many scientists believe that the rise will be around 0.8 meters.
