What Is Sea Level Rise ?

One of the most noticeable effects of global warming has been the melting of ice sheets and glaciers all over the world. Nearly 10 percent of the land mass is covered by ice sheets and glaciers, and they exist in all continents other than Australia. In addition, these ice sheets and glaciers are the largest reservoirs of fresh water.

In the last century, it has been seen that ice sheets and glaciers located in Greenland and Antarctica have melted quite substantially. Here the ice is melting faster than it is being replaced. Both temperature change as well as changes in the rain pattern has affected the way ice is replaced in ice sheets and glaciers. When there is high temperature for a particular period of time, the amount of rain that falls decreases, and this directly affects the formation of ice sheets and glaciers. In addition, the high temperatures also cause the melting of the ice, which flow into rivers, lakes and oceans. This excess flow along with the melted ice contributes to sea level rise.More...

Sea Level Rise Statistics

Sea Level Rise Statistics              Over the last one hundred years, sea level rise is taking place at the rate of 1.8 mm each year. However, between the years 1993 and 2003, sea level rise was higher, around 2.8 mm to 3.1 mm each year. Global warming is playing a big role in sea level rise, and scientists claim in the coming century, this rise is bound to increase.Due to warming of the planet, the water is undergoing thermal expansion.

Coupled with this, the ice sheets and glaciers are melting which is contributing to the rise in sea level. More than melting of ice sheets and glaciers, thermal expansion has been blamed for increase in the levels of the seas. Sea level rise statistics are quite frightening, especially if you take into consideration the statistics for 20th century. The rise has been between 90 mm and 880 mm, with an average of 480 mm. In this century, the scientists expect the sea level to rise by 2 meters, but many scientists believe that the rise will be around 0.8 meters. Based on the studies and observations carried out in the 20th century, scientists have determined that the sea level rise on an average was 0.2 mm to 0.4 mm each year.More...

Global Warming :

Climate-Change-And-Sea-Level-Rise      Coastal areas around the world are facing problems due to climate change. Some of the main problems due to climate change are sea level rise, changes in the storms that occur in oceans and seas, loss of land, and flooding. In the US, it has been seen that along most of the coastal regions, sea level is rising. This phenomenon is also seen around the rest of the world. More..
