Scientists were shocked to learn that the ozone layer was depleting, and it came as a surprise to the whole world. It was found that the main reason for the depletion of the ozone layer is the use of CFCs or chlorofluorocarbons. CFCs are used mainly by industries because of their varied uses and also cheap costs. It is one chemical that is used widely by several types of industries. The only way to control the ozone layer depletion is that the industries should stop using CFCs completely. |

However, it is an easier said than done.CFC is a type of chemical which reacts with oxygen and replaces it. Ozone layer is completely made up of oxygen molecules. One single molecule of CFC can actually replace thousands of oxygen molecules. This is what is causing the ozone layer depletion in simple terms.
Ozone layer is the top most layer in the ionosphere and it is extremely important for the survival of life on earthy. It filters the ultraviolet rays of the sun and only passes the rays that are safe to human beings and environment on earth. However, these days, people in several parts of the world are exposed to ultraviolet rays because of the ozone layer depletion. Direct exposure to ultraviolet rays can cause several skin diseases, including melanoma.
Along with the CFC, which is the main cause, other gases like methane can also cause damage to the ozone layer. Methane is a byproduct of vehicle pollution and industrial pollution, and it too plays a role in depleting the ozone layer. So, production of methane should also be reduced as a solution to ozone depletion.
