It was discovered through the satellite images. The ozone layer is made of clear blue gas and it is easily visible from space. Ozone layer is important for human beings and other living beings on Earth because it protects all living organisms from the harmful effects of the ultraviolet rays from the sun. The UV rays can cause various types of cancer, and other melanomas of the skin in living beings and people. The rays are also harmful for plants and sea life.
However, scientists realized about the harmful effects of UV rays and the ozone layer depletion much later. During the Industrial Revolution, several industries across the world used chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in their industrial processes. The CFCs are extremely damaging for the ozone layer, and they are the main cause for ozone layer depletion. Every industry, anywhere on the world, used CFCs because they were the cheapest and best option. So, from 1960 to 1980, there was severe usage of this particular damaging carbon. After the seriousness of depletion was brought to awareness by the scientists, all industries across the world were requested to stop using them. Several industries have taken the green path, and stopped processes that required the usage of CFCs. However, there is still strong usage of CFCs is prevalent across many industries.
