Ozone layer is extremely essential for the Earth because it protects us from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun. These rays are screened at the stratosphere level by the ozone layer, and only the good form of sunlight reaches us eventually. However, since the 1980s, several things have changed, and scientists have discovered big gaping holes in the ozone layer. |

The main cause of ozone layer depletion has been attributed to CFCs or chlorofluorocarbons. It is by far the leading cause for most of the depletion, and next comes pollution. Mainly these two factors cause alterations in the atmospheric gases, and lead to the various environmental problems like ozone layer depletion. CFCs are actually very valuable for industries, and even though many countries have stopped using them, some still do not want to completely call off the usage of CFCs. People now know for several years later how and why CFC is damaging the ozone layer. The problem with CFC is that the chlorine molecule present in it attracts the oxygen molecule present in the ozone layer. Actually ozone layer is completely made up of oxygen molecules. So, one chlorine molecule can destroy several thousands of oxygen molecules. This causes the depletion of the ozone layer. Though CFCs have been the single biggest factor, there are several more causes like environmental pollution and air pollution which are causing ozone depletion.
