| Definition Of Ozone Depletion

The earth is made up of layers like the troposphere, stratosphere, and ionosphere. The troposphere is the closest layer to the earth and the one that humans are closest to. The troposphere has the purest form of atmosphere that can sustain life and also maintain the environmental balance. The stratosphere is the layer that houses the ozone layer, and it is somewhere above 10 kilometers to 50 kilometers in range. |

The ozone layer is mainly made up of oxygen molecules and the main function of the layer is to filter the rays of the sun before sending it down to the earth. Sunlight that we get everyday actually has infrared rays, ultraviolet rays and white rays. The other two are not visible to the naked eye. However, among these rays, the ultraviolet rays are considered to be the most harmful of all. It can cause various skin problems and eye diseases among human, and also it can stop plant growth. That is why we need the ozone layer to protect us from its harmful effects.
Ozone depletion is measured by the size of the hole in the ozone layer. As of today, one hole has been discovered on top of Antarctica. This can be seen through satellite images. Ozone layer is made up of bluish gas, and can easily be identified while looking at it from the top. The highest level of stratosphere is completely made up of ozone.
So, ozone depletion is the decrease in the ozone layer caused due to the displacement of the gases in the ozone layer. The main culprit for ozone layer depletion has been named as CFC, or chlorofluorocarbons.
