Solutions To Desertification

Desertification is a problem that the world is facing, and governments have to find solutions to it. The first step that the governments have to take is to prevent the land from getting degraded. This way when they take steps to repair the damage, no other piece of land is damaged. One of the main solutions to desertification is ensuring that the livestock grazing on the land is reduced. This will allow the plants to re-grow.

In addition, the areas that are worse affected due to desertification should be mulched and then new trees should be planted. However, these two processes are expensive.

The most effective way of fighting desertification would be ensure that proper land management is undertaken in drylands. Here are some solutions to desertification that can be undertaken not just by governments, but also by environmental organizations that are trying to undo the damage done by climatic changes and human activities:

  • Deforestation is one of the causes of desertification. This can be tackled by ensuring that trees are planted in the areas affected by desertification. By planting trees, soil erosion caused due to wind and rainwater can be substantially reduced.
  • Overcultivation strips the land of its nutrients, and thereby degrading the soil. Therefore, using farming practices like crop rotation, and using manure and compost as fertilizers will help to rejuvenate the soil.
  • Overgrazing causes even the young trees and plants to be eaten. This, in turn, destroys and damages the flora. So, where ever livestock are being grazed, the young trees and plants should be protected so that cattle and livestock cannot devour them.
  • Using poor irrigation methods causes moisture to evaporate from the surface of the soil allowing soil erosion. Therefore, using good irrigation practices by ensuring that the soil is moist will prevent soil erosion, and thus desertification.

What-Is-Desertification      Desertification is a phenomenon where the land gets degraded so that it cannot be used for growing plants, trees or for cultivation. Usually this sort of land degradation is seen in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid regions of the world, and it caused due to many reasons, like changes in the climate and human activities. More..
