The main thing that is required is changing the attitude not just of the people, but also governments. People have to offered incentives to improve the status of the land. This means that they would have to be taught how to use better agricultural practices as well as use the land in a sustainable manner.
Water management, using different methods to prevent soil erosion, preventing salinization of soil, applying methods to ensure soil degradation does not take place are important methods to prevent desertification. In addition, people and governments have to realize that overgrazing, unabated deforestation, overusing the land for agricultural purposes and constantly flattening of soil all lead to desertification. Therefore, strategies need to be put in place to ensure that crop rotation is practiced, better water management techniques are used and most plants, shrubs and trees are planted to prevent soil erosion by wind and water.
If plants, shrubs and trees are not removed, soil erosion will be stopped. In many drought hit areas where desertification is starting, it has been seen that overuse of land for cultivation, overgrazing, indiscriminate mining and cutting wood for fuel and timber are the main causes for reduced rainfall. This has an adverse effect on the land and leads to desertification. So, using sustainable methods of agriculture and protecting flora are key methods of preventing desertification.
Teaching people, who live in these areas alternative methods of earning sustainable income, is important to prevent desertification. Instead of overcultivation or raising livestock, people can be taught to opt for dryland aquaculture, tourism-connected activities or greenhouse agriculture.
