| How Can We Prevent Desertification ?

Desertification is a process where the soil condition becomes bad due to removal of vegetation and loss of top soil. This phenomenon is prevalent in arid and dry sub humid regions of the world where human activities and climatic changes have led to desertification. The wet and dry forests in the tropics are being denuded due to overpopulation. |

Overgrazing and subsistence farming are taking their toll on the land. Desertification is a problem not just in developing countries, but also developed countries. And that is why we need to take steps to prevent it.
So, how can we prevent desertification? The most effective method of preventing desertification is by teaching people to use resources in a sustainable manner. The main causes of desertification should be tackled rather than the symptoms.
Where overgrazing is causing desertification, steps should be taken to reduce the grazing of animals so that plants are given sufficient time to re-grow. By layer a cover of leaves and sawdust on the soil helps to enrich it. If sand dunes are an issue, then covering them with boulders will ensure that wind does move sand from one place to another. In places where water is available for irrigation, plants or shrubs should be planted to ensure that the top soil is not blown away by wind or washed away by water.
Desertification is not a process that occurs overnight. It takes years. Therefore, conservation groups can take part actively in preventing desertification by spreading knowledge on different ways of prevention. People living in the areas where desertification is taking place have to be educated on the harmful effects overgrazing and mismanagement of land.
