  • Desertification is a misnomer because most people think that desert expansion is desertification. This is not a fact.
  • According to the latest statistics, around one billion people are adversely affected due to desertification. This means that one-sixth of the population of the world will face economic hardships, poverty, and starvation due to desertification.
  • One major cause of poverty is desertification, and that is why there is rural migration into urbanized areas.
  • Around 70 percent of all drylands around the world are facing desertification.
  • Nearly 73 percent of rangeland around the world has been degraded due to desertification.
  • Every year, 24 billion tons of top soil is lost due to desertification.
  • The continent that has been affected the quite severely due to desertification is Africa. Nearly two-thirds of the continent is either desert or dryland. And, nearly 73 percent of drylands used for agriculture has been degraded either badly or moderately.
