What Is The pH Of Acid Rain

The chemical composition of soil and water is measured using a pH scale. What exactly does the pH indicate? The pH balance of water or soil indicates whether the substance has a right balance of oxygen and hydrogen which are essential for the survival of ecosystem. The pH balance should be neutral and not alkaline or acidic. The composition is measured by the number of hydrogen ions present in the water. The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, and the ideal balance is 7.

However, this is an impossible number to find in the present day world. The purest form of water will have an ideal pH balance of 7. Today, no water in rivers, lakes or sea is pure. It is all contaminated.

The pH balance for rain water is considered to be 5.6 on the pH scale. The pH balance for rain is reduced because it reacts with the carbonic acid present in the atmosphere before it becomes rain water, and as a result, the rainwater gets a slightly acidic property. However, 5.6 on the scale is still considered harmless and safe.

Acid rain is defines as the kind of rain that has rainwater which measures less than 5 on the pH scale. Due to pollution from the industrial sector, and also due to burning of excessive coal by the power plants, the rain tends to become more acidic in nature. When substances like coal and oil are burnt, they produce sulfur and nitrous oxide, and the rain water absorbs these chemicals and becomes acidic.

Where-Does-Acid-Rain-Come-From      Acid rain is nothing but the regular rain that has turned acidic. There are several causes for acid rain, and one of the main reasons among them is high levels of pollution. Several industries, vehicles and power generating plants are dependant on fossil fuels like coal and oil for their operations. More..
