What Does Acid Rain Do To Rocks ?

Acid rain is mainly caused due to pollution, which in turn is caused by industries and also vehicles. It is mainly caused due to burning of fossil fuels because this process emits acids like sulfur and nitrogen dioxide. When these gases react with oxygen in the atmosphere and come in contact with sunlight, they turn acidic in nature.Rain water, when it falls one earth, tends to absorb all the naturally occurring impurities in the air like volcanic dust, dust particles and pollen.

This helps to clear and cleanse the air. However, when sulfur and nitrogen oxide or acidic gases remain in the environment due to pollution, raindrops absorb these also and become acidic in nature. The acidity of the raindrops is measured using the pH scale. The lower the pH value, more the acidic the rain is.

Acid rain causes severe damage to the environment that we live in. It contains carbonic acid, which reacts with the chemicals present in rocks. There are all kinds of rocks in nature, and there are carbonic ones too. So, the acid rain reacts heavily with these rocks. When acid rain is in small amounts, it does not matter. However, when the rain water is highly acidic in nature, it will cause the rocks to decay. Rocks are needed to maintain the balance on land, and they are an integral part of the composition of nature on land. If rocks disappear, there could be severe damage to the environment. The acid corrodes the rocks, and they slowly get dissolved and then get washed away by water.

What-Is-Acid-Rain      Acid rain is the term used to describe raindrops that have become acidic in nature. Everything from soil to water on earth has a natural pH balance that it needs to maintain. When this pH balance increases or decreases, it changes the properties of the raindrops or the soil. When it rains, the air in the atmosphere is cleaned naturally. More..
