Effect Of Acid Rain On Plant Growth

Everybody in the modern day world has heard about acid rain and its harmful effects. Acid rain is a form of rain that has acidic particles in it. These acidic particles are absorbed from the environment, and they contaminate the environment by raining. The normal behavior of rain is to clean the atmosphere. However, because of the high levels of pollution these days, the environment is getting more polluted when it rains.

As a result all living beings are suffering, including plants and animals.Plants that grow in the wild as well as crops get affected by acidic rain. When acid rain touches the soil the plants absorb the water. However, excess sulfur and nitrogen present in acid raindrops does not benefit the plants. Instead it causes more damage to them. The roots of the crops or the plants get damaged due to the absorption of the water. The naturally occurring nutrients in the soil are also damaged due to the acid rain and also contaminated as a result. The nutrients are created through decaying material in the soil. Even these nutrients have nitrogen and sulfur and other minerals in them. However, the soil maintains a unique pH balance. But, acid rain disturbs the pH balance of the soil and harms the plant growth.

The plants get affected in several ways due to such rains. They do not grow well because they are getting more chemicals than nutrients. They develop root rot and die sooner. Even if they end up surviving, they do not bear flowers or fruits.
