Protect The Earth From Home

The nations of the world have recognized global warming as a serious problem and have signed the Kyoto Protocol to help stop it. That is, except for the United States.

The good news is that if one third of the US population chooses to make a few simple changes in their daily lives, it will lower the United States’ carbon dioxide emissions to meet Kyoto standards. That’s right, average citizens can accomplish what the United States government will not! Ready to get started?

First, replace your old light bulbs with Energy Star efficient florescent bulbs. These use one quarter the energy of traditional bulbs, last up to a decade, and are available almost everywhere. Turn off lights you aren’t using.

Buy a Hybrid vehicle if you can. If you can’t, get your car tuned up. Change the air filter and oil on schedule, and make sure your tires are properly inflated. Don’t ‘race’ the engine and turn the engine off rather than idling at the drive thru. Fill up your car in the morning or evening, when temperatures are lower. Drive less or carpool. These simple things can keep one hundred thousand tons of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere each year.

Replace or repair your outdated home heating and cooling equipment. For a typical American home, heating and cooling accounts for one half of the monthly energy bill. Keep your thermostat set at 74 in summer and 68 in winter.
Working together, these small changes can help save the Earth.
